Kenya: Shop Together

The local sarongs - kangas and kikois - make good buys. So do batik-printed cotton or silk. If you're looking for Makonde carvings in ebony, remember to buy genuine pieces - not wood polished black - and keep in mind that these will be heavy to carry home. Other Kenyan souvenirs include sisal baskets, soapstone carvings and elephant hair bracelets (though you need to make sure you're buying elephant hair, not reed grass covered with boot polish).
